RS Asbestos were appointed to undertake specialist asbestos remediation works within the boiler room area of a Church in Padiham, Lancashire. The works formed part of wider refurbishment activities following the identification of asbestos thermal insulation residues and remaining asbestos insulating board (AIB) within the basement area.

The project involved the construction of fully controlled asbestos enclosures, removal of remaining asbestos containing materials under licensed conditions, and detailed cleaning of contaminated surfaces. Once the bulk asbestos removal had been completed as far as reasonably practicable, specialist abrasive surface preparation techniques were used, referred to as ‘Quilling’, as the final remediation stage to remove residual asbestos contamination and historic coatings from the original brickwork surfaces.

This type of specialist surface remediation is increasingly becoming a preferred option for many clients where historic boiler rooms and plant areas contain residual asbestos contamination embedded within painted or uneven surfaces. The process allows surfaces to be cleaned back to the original substrate, helping to achieve a high standard of remediation whilst also improving the final appearance of the area and reducing the need for extensive structural removal works.

The works were completed within a live church environment with strict controls in place to protect adjacent occupied areas, whilst maintaining programme requirements for follow-on contractors. The project was successfully completed following independent UKAS accredited analytical clearance procedures, leaving the boiler room areas clean, safe, and ready for refurbishment works to commence.
