Asbestos is one of the most common causes of respiratory illness after tobacco smoking and the only known cause of Mesothelioma – a cancer of the pleural lining of the lung
Asbestos is the common name given to a group of six naturally occurring minerals that were widely mined, imported and exported globally. During the 19th and 20th century Crocidolite (Blue), Amosite (Brown – also known as Grunerite) and Chrysotile (White) Asbestos were widely imported to the UK in large quantities. Due to the characteristics of each Asbestos type, it was used extensively in a wide and varied range of products including: Thermal and acoustic Insulations, building materials, mechanical brake or friction linings, various types of gaskets, electrical insulators and chemical protectors. Pure chrysotile asbestos was even used as fake snow at Christmas time, and can famously be seen in the blizzard sequence of the Wizard Oz film layered across the entire cast and set, it was often scattered on Christmas trees and around homes freely to give a festive effect that may have proven damaging for some and deadly for many in years since. The Asbestos prohibition regulations 1985 saw a ban on the import and use of Blue and Brown Asbestos types but it wasn’t until 1999 that an amendment to the prohibition was imposed seeing a total ban on the import, supply and use of all Asbestos types or products containing Asbestos.

The communication from the Admin team was excellent and they organised the Asbestos survey for us. John came out and explained the process to us
and the report came back within a few days. Thankfully it was a negative result from the lab and we received a certificate to confirm the result.

The work included AIB removal and precautionary decontamination of a large, very full garage. Despite a very cautious approach on my part, a good proportion of the stored equipment was able to be salvaged and the space was left immaculate. I found a piece of old board in our attic which I suspected might have been some old asbestos insulation. Calderdale Council only accept the cement sheets at the local tip and suggested I call an asbestos disposal company.
I spoke with Steve who asked for some photos of the board. He got back to me a few minutes later and said that, on inspection of the photos, it wasn’t asbestos.

David was assigned to me today to remove the concrete/asbestos slab above my gas boiler. He did a great job considering the amount of soot that came down the chimney. My room was left clean and tidy
